Describe your first encounter with letterpress

When I was about 3 or 4 years old, my grandfather read me a Barbapapa children's book where the characters printed a book using movable type (I was born in 2010, it was a pretty old book). From then on, I became passionate about printing in general, making potato stamps and using little stamps for fun.

Avevo circa 3-4 anni, mio nonno mi ha letto un libro per bambini dei Barbapapà, in cui i personaggi stampavano un libro a caratteri mobili (sono nato nel 2010, era un libro piuttosto vecchiotto). Da lì mi sono appassionato della stampa in generale, facendo per gioco stampi con patate e stampini.

Where did you learn?

Being self-taught, over time I set up my own workshop. I learned a lot by meeting people through Facebook, who helped me a ton.

Da autodidatta, col tempo ho creato il mio laboratorio. Ho imparato molto conoscendo persone attraverso Facebook, che mi hanno aiutato tantissimo.

Who was your most influential teacher?

I didn't have a teacher in the traditional sense; many printers in different parts of the world helped me (like John B Easson or Thomas Gravemaker, Paolo Celotto). I often exchange ideas with Luca Lattuga, who helped me a lot with, for example, buying my proof press.

Non ho avuto un maestro nel senso tradizionale, mi hanno aiutato molti tipografi in diverse parti del mondo (come John B Easson o Thomas Gravemaker, Paolo Celotto), ho spesso degli scambi con Luca Lattuga, che mi ha aiutato molto con, ad esempio, acquistare il mio tiraprove.

What super power would you like to have?

More patience and being more organized.

Do you prefer to work alone or with others?

I am used to working alone, but I really enjoy working with others. It depends on the type of work.

When do your best ideas occur to you?

When I am not looking for them or when, for some reason, I cannot print. But as soon as I get the chance to bring them to life, I often have second thoughts.

Quando non le cerco o quando, per qualche motivo, non posso stampare. Poi appena ho l'occasione di realizzarle spesso non mi convincono più.

If you were to die and come back as a typeface, which would it be?

I think Helvetica, but I would also really like to be an Art Nouveau typeface like Barnum.

Penso l'Helvetica, ma anche un liberty come il Barnum mi piacerebbe molto.

What tool do you use more often than any other?

The typometer, even though I often measure by eye.

What books are currently on your nightstand?

The biography of Steve Jobs, a book from 2025 on Flottiglia and several graphic design/typography books, like the "Graphis Annual".

If you could study with any printer throughout history, who would it be?

I would absolutely love to work with Jost Hochuli. But also to spend a few days with various contemporary typographers.

Mi piacerebbe moltissimo lavorare Jost Hochuli. Ma anche fare delle giornate con diversi tipografi contemporanei.

If you have your own shop, what equipment do you own?

A Korrex Stuttgart proof press, a large format Adana, a large exposure unit – which I rarely use –, a paper cutter that I restored, a bike with a small Adana mounted on it, a proof press. Three furniture racks, many type cabinets. Soon I will have two 1.50-meter-high Boston presses to restore.

Un proofpress Korrex Stuttgart, un'Adana formato grande, Un grande bromografo -che uso raramente-, un tagliarisme che ho restaurato, una bici con montata sopra una piccola Adana, un tirabozze. Tre marginiere, molte cassettiere. Presto avrò due Boston alte 1.50 metri da restaurare.

If you could change one thing about your shop, what would it be?

Managing to keep the print shop organized.

Riuscire a tener ordinata la stamperia.

When and where are you the happiest?

When I'm with my cats, Maui and Olivia, and when I print.

Quando sono con i miei gatti, Maui e Olivia, e quando stampo.

What is your greatest fear/worry?

Damaging my equipment, humidity, carelessness... or the exposure unit catching fire.

Danneggiare la mia attrezzatura, umidità, disattenzione... o il bromografo che prende fuoco.

What do you think is useful about what you make?

Spreading awareness of this technique, restoring various machinery and materials, and saving them from destruction.

Far conoscere questa tecnica e rimettere in funzione e salvare dalla distruzione macchinari e materiali vari.

What’s your day job?

I'm starting graphic design school next year.

Devo iniziare la scuola come grafico il prossimo anno.

Do you use any other techniques or media besides letterpress?

Yes, I also work with my Mac, for graphics or 3D printing; I often integrate these two into letterpress printing.
